Should you use an acrylic or gel pedicure to cover up toenail fugus?

Posted in: Blogs

Fake nails, acrylic nails or gel nails definitely will cover up the unsightliness. For a short time, at least. Adding those stunning nail art designs is definitely a better sight to look at a day in and day out, as opposed to toenail fungus and infections, right? Yes, we get that the aesthetic appeal is definitely the decider when it comes to choosing between showing your feet off in Summer.

But, this is only a temporary solution. Think of it as the same principle as an ostrich with its head buried in the sand. Doesn’t mean you can’t see it, that it’s not there.

Toenail fungus occurs mainly because a lot of moisture is trapped under the toenail bed. When the moisture is able to breathe again (as in the case when your shoes are removed) the moisture is trapped in your toenail. The warmth and the moisture attract bacteria, which then starts affecting your toenail, causing the unease and the unsightliness.

But what causes moisture in your toenail?

When you walk barefoot in public showers or even wearing socks that are way too tight; are common causes of excess moisture.

So, is it safe to apply an acrylic pedicure to a toenail riddle with fungus? This the best you can do for your toenails:

  • Uncover the problem vs Cover up the issue

The best thing for you to do is to see a podiatrist who is able to treat the fungus. The best course of action is to treat the problem and not cover it up. Covering up the fungus only locks in more moisture which is detrimental to the health of your feet. Because acrylic and gel products don’t allow your toenail to breathe, the fungus will only grow and spread.

  • Removing an acrylic pedicure could be more strenuous than normal.

Now, if your condition worsens underneath the artificial nail, this could also mean that come time to remove the acrylic; you’re in for a bit of a problem. Removing such nails normally takes a lot more strength and could be more painful.

With that being said, our first choice is always nailed health. This doesn’t mean that we love nail art any less or that pedicures don’t have to be done because of ill-health toenails. It just means that any nail art deserves a top-notch canvas. And for us, that means great looking healthy toenails.
